Project status: active

The “Plasticity of central auditory circuits” team headed by Nicolas Michalski focuses on four priorities:

  • Making an assessment of the genetic forms of hearing loss (traditionally peripheral) where there are hidden deficiencies in the central auditory system.
  • Decrypting the role of genes involved in the development and functioning of the central auditory system.
  • Determining which hearing functions are affected by deficiencies in these genes.
  • Finally, determining, with the help of the Centre for Research and Innovation in Human Audiology (CERIAH), whether the same deficiencies observed in mice are present in patients.

Nicolas Michalski is a neuroscience researcher at the Institut Pasteur, where he is part of the team led by Christine Petit in the Genetics and Physiology of Hearing Laboratory[M1]. His work focuses on how the ears and the brain decipher speech, and in particular the mechanism by which sound waves are transmitted in the cells of the inner ear, and the interaction between these cells and brain cells. Through his research, Nicolas is aiming to understand the causes of hearing disorders and the molecules involved.

Nicolas has been involved in science from his earliest years, being intrigued by the “body machine” and how it works. During his studies, Nicolas Michalski met Prof. Christine Petit, who introduced him to genetics and in particular the auditory system. This collaboration has reinforced his interest in the hearing sciences, which he sees as a promising field.

Nicolas works alongside professionals from different fields, sharing discoveries, knowledge and enthusiasm with them to give his projects the right technological and human resources to address hearing issues. When he started in hearing science some 15 years ago, he never thought that research and therapy would evolve as much as they have. In the coming years, he would like to explore issues related to language and speech comprehension. The opening of the new Hearing Institute will provide a springboard for his research.

The Fondation Pour l’Audition Emerging Career Scientific Prize is a true mark of recognition and an unexpected honor.
