How does the brain perceive speech?

Project status: closed

To understand language, the brain must extract information about speech from the continuous flow of sound provided by the ears.

To explain these phenomena, Dr Ludovic Bellier will work in Professor Knight’s laboratory and record the brain’s activity while listening to speech, using a state-of-the-art neuro-imaging technique, high-density electrocorticography (ECoG) used with patients with neurological disorders. ECoG uses electrodes to record brain activity. This approach, with its unrivaled spatial and temporal precision, shows how the brain processes speech.

Exploration of this kind could radically change the treatment of persons with hearing disorders, by leading to the development of new implants enhancing the perception of speech and could have benefits for patients with aphasia or other neurological language disorders.
