Over the last three decades, cochlear implants have made great progress, enabling people with profound hearing loss to regain aural function, particularly speech comprehension. These improvements are linked to aural rehabilitation strategies, as well as technical progress in sound processing by implants.

The project proposed by Dr. Deguine and Dr. Barone aims to understand how people with cochlear implants distinguish sounds in their environment. From perception to brain imaging, the explorations will cover a wide scope, enabling the researchers to identify the acoustic characteristics of the human voice, music and everyday sounds, which are essential for people with implants.

This research should help improve cochlear implant strategies and quality of life for patients with implants.
