Project status: closed

Dr Bouton, a postdoctoral student at the Psychology of Perception Laboratory under the supervision of Professor Judit Gervain, is studying how the brain of the newborn reorganizes its activity after a cochlear implant.

To answer this question, Dr Bouton will study brain activity in the newborn by using an innovative cerebral imaging technique known as fNIRS, compatible with the wearing of a cochlear implant. The children will receive three types of stimuli before and after the cochlear implant: auditory, visual and audiovisual. The idea is to compare the ability of each child to identify sounds before and after the implant and determine whether children with implants manage to identify sounds like children with normal hearing.

This study should make it possible to draw up recommendations for teachers and speech therapists to improve the treatment of children who have had a cochlear implant.
