A cochlear implant is a miniaturized electronic medical device aimed at restoring hearing for people with severe to profound hearing loss, where damage to the ear prevents it from functioning. An implant compensates for this deficiency by transforming environmental sounds into electrical signals that can be transported directly to the auditory nerve and the brain.
A cochlear implant is composed of an outer and an inner part with an electrode carrier. The inner component is positioned manually in a surgical procedure requiring general anesthesia.
Dr. Yann Nguyen, a MD/PhD in the ENT department of Pitié-Salpêtrière teaching hospital in Paris[M1] and Inserm laboratory 1159 (“Minimally Invasive Robot-Based Hearing Rehabilitation[M2]”), took an interest in cochlear implants very early on. While working on his medicine thesis, he explored the least traumatic and least invasive way to insert the electrode carrier into the cochlea, the part of the inner ear involved in hearing. Later, for his PhD in science, his project turned to the development of a surgical robot for cochlear implants, working in cooperation with robotic engineers.
This project led to the design of the RoboTol surgical robot, to which Dr. Nguyen made a major contribution, and its commercial launch by Collin Medical in 2017. During cochlear implants, the robot inserts the electrode carrier with precision and minimal trauma compared to manual insertion by a surgeon. It is also used in clinics for middle ear surgery.
In the near future, Dr. Yann Nguyen will join the Hearing Institute in Paris, one of the leading centers of fundamental and clinical research in France, where he will direct a research team focused on therapies.
